Omni Logistics Uses Cold Box as Active Refrigerated Shipping Solution For Their Bio-Tech Client

As a high-value transportation logistics provider, Omni Logistics  contacted Cold Box to help deliver  a more cost-efficient, time-efficient, and overall, reliable and transparent active refrigerated shipping solution to their client in the bio-tech industry. According to Omni Logistics account manager, Jonathan Nasseri:

“We have a bio-tech client who had a problem and came to us for help moving some refrigerated and frozen product from their vendor in Southern California out to Texas . Dedicated reefer trucks were too expensive, especially when our client had more than one temperature requirement and considering they typically shipped only a few pallets at a time. Multi-temp LTL reefer options were even more limited, often had too long of transit times, and were not very reliable.

I found Cold Box in an online search for an ‘active refrigerated shipping solution’. Now, our new active solution using a couple active pallet shippers set at two different temperatures (6.5C +/- 0.5C and -20C +/- 0.5C), allows us to complete our pickups with one person in under 1 hour . Further, we take up less space on the dock, and add a number of notable value adds.

For one thing, there is no temperature excursion of any kind with our new process. We load the active pallet shippers inside the walk in reefer / freezer with the boxes set to the exact same temperature, so everything is kept very tight from a compliance standpoint. No more worrying if there is enough dry ice to last a potential delay or that there might be too much and temperature could drop too low . Now we and our client both have direct virtually real-time access to payload temperature, battery levels, location, shock, humidity, and more from pickup to delivery plus a very slick report at the end of the trip summarizing everything . In the end, the Cold Box active refrigerated shipping model offered a significant overall cost savings along with improved control and visibility, so it’s really been well received by all involved in the process.”

Refrigerated Pallet Shipper More Effective and Cost Efficient for Run Wild Seafood Supply’s Frozen Shipping Distribution in Houston

For start-up Houston seafood distributors, Run Wild Seafood Supply , Cold Box Express’ month-to-month rental service for a refrigerated pallet shipper has proved to be more effective and cost efficient than previously utilized refrigerated LTL trucking transport services .

According to Run Wild’s Euna Poole Guidry, the real values of the Cold Box active pallet shipper have been :

  • The 24/7 reporting and trip summaries that ensure the fresh and frozen seafood product is temperature safe for the duration of transit,
  • The flexibility and quick turnaround time gained from being able to independently supply the restaurant market, and
  • The ability to receive fresh and frozen seafood supply from sources in Louisiana and store the product safely while waiting for the remaining shipments before transporting the cargo to customers in the Houston area.

Cost-wise, with Run Wild’s one month rental commitment, the refrigerated pallet shipper pays for itself within five trips and becomes increasingly less expensive to use than traditional refrigerated LTL transport with its additional fuel charges and drop off fees .

Run Wild Seafood Supply transports authentic, wild caught, fresh and fresh flash frozen Louisiana seafood items to distinguishing Houston area restaurants. Their focus is Vermilion Bay shrimp, Gulf Coast shrimp, crabs, fin fish, live and packaged crab, live and packaged Louisiana crawfish, and more exotic French Louisiana delicacies such as, alligator, turtle, and frog legs.

Cold Box Conducts In-House Performance Qualification Testing for Pharmaceutical Cold Chain Clients

Over the past several months, Cold Box Express has conducted numerous in-house operational and performance qualification tests (OQ and PQ) tests on their active pallet shippers in order to prepare for upcoming pharmaceutical cold chain validation testing by several third party organizations.

One of the main purposes for these cold chain performance qualification tests is to ensure the container performs as expected under simulated real-world conditions. These include affixing numerous NISTED internal probes and temperature loggers inside payload compartment to determine if the pallet shipper is capable of maintaining a consistent set temperature point during both typical transport scenarios. Worst case scenarios include extreme ambient conditions, power outages, an improperly closed or sealed door, or an empty payload compartment.

high risk involved in shipping temperature sensitive cargo such as active pharmaceutical ingredients, vaccines, or biological materials, the insurance companies of many pharmaceutical businesses will not permit shipments without custom critical validation through strict performance qualification testing.

This pharmaceutical cold chain validation thus ensures the shipping and distribution process will offer no negative impact to the safety, efficacy or quality of the biological or pharmaceutical products. Negative impacts that can compromise the temperature controlled pharmaceutical shipments include any irregularities in cooling, warming, and/or freezing due to external temperature changes, shipment mishandling, or improper packaging.

The Cold Box in-house custom critical performance qualification tests had a set temperature at 41 ºF or 5 ºC +/- 1º, while t emperature loggers were programmed to record every 5 minutes for 60 hours. These temperature loggers were then placed strategically on the newly manufactured frame, which was then mounted onto a 40″x 48″ wooden pallet. Cold Box Express delivers Belle Chevre goat cheese via active pallet shippers for specialty food shipping

Makers of award-winning artisan goat cheese for 25 years, Belle Chevre is now using Cold Box Express’ active pallet shippers for their specialty food shipping. With high-end retailers such as Whole Foods and Dean & Deluca stocking their products, Belle Chevre struggled in the past not only to find refrigerated LTL trucking companies to transport their cheese, but to discover a specialty food shipping solution that would maintain and ensure the high quality of their handmade and hand-packed products upon delivery. “Since we are dealing with a non-commodified product, there’s a greater need for our cheese to be handled properly,” says Tasia Malakasis, owner, president, and artisan cheesemaker at Belle Chevre. “With Cold Box Express, not only are we receiving detailed information about our shipments through temperature and GPS monitoring, we have also reduced our turnaround time from 7-10 days delivery to just 2 days, which has a huge impact on our production facility.”

Averitt Uses Cold Box to Expand Refrigerated LTL Shipping

Averitt uses the Cold Box to move pallet-sized refrigerated shipments 500 miles next day and is the first LTL carrier to use the Cold Box for refrigerated LTL shipping.

Equipped with satellite-based GPS technology, the battery-powered pallet shipper lets Averitt track the actual cargo, not the trailer, as it moves through Averitt’s LTL terminal network, said Chuck Odom, vice president of global development for the carrier. “If the door is opened, we’re alerted by e-mail and by phone,” he said. “We know the temperature and variation, the battery level and where it is at all times.” The pallet shipper also eliminates the need to use dry ice to cool smaller loads for refrigerated LTL shipping.

The Cold Box uses a forced-air heating and cooling system powered by a rechargeable battery system. The active pallet shipper holds temperatures ranging from 10 degrees below zero to 140 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 150 hours and can be recharged from a standard power outlet, according to Averitt. The pallet shippers are designed for dual 40- by 48-inch pallets, and stand about 82 inches high.
